Concealed weapon safety course

Last Saturday, Mandy and I took the concealed weapon safety course to allow us to apply for the permit from the Sheriff's office. In a nutshell, the instructor was arrogant, chauvinistic, and on a power trip. He is the son of radio commentator Robert D. Raiford, from the "John Boy and Billy Show". For those familiar with the show, that explains it. I found his approach to teaching and firearms instruction to be typical when the average guy is given the authority to "enlighten" novices with his firearms knowledge, which amounts to little more than a Barney Fife type display of his own supremacy over the subject. "Laaadies and gentlemennnn, what I now hold in my hand is what's known to the common man as a buuullllleeetttttt."
After only about 2 hours of discussion of course content, we were instructed to go to the range, which I thought was premature since at least two of the females in the class had never shot a gun. I stood with Mandy while she easily killed the silhouette shown here. She had to shoot 10 rounds at 7, 5, and 3 yards. Then five rounds from the hip at 1 yard away. You can see her five rounds from the hip grouped in the upper 7/8/9 rings. Despite the noise, others' brass cases flying into her station, and for only having shot this .38 cal revolver once prior, I was very impressed with how well she did. She passed with flying colors!!

I was up next and Mandy watched on while I shot the silhouette below. This course was really just a basic skills test and not a competition, therefore the target was too close for me to be proud of the result. The instructor saw my target and told Mandy, "Show off".
So now we're scheduled to get finger printed next week and receive our permits in 90 days. Living in Charlotte, with four murders in four days and a fifth body found yesterday in the woods along our commute, a permit to carry is nice to have.
