A Gift for Tech. Sgt. Caldwell

A couple weeks ago, Dad received some poster sized pictures of "Our Belle", Frank Caldwell and Lloyd Reid's plane in WWII, from the son of the 485th Bomb Group photographer. (The silver, unpainted plane) We felt one of the prints was frame quality and decided to present it to Frank at the next meeting of the 8th Air Force, Charlotte wing, that he attends, which was held yesterday. AF and I gave him several 8x10 photos, a letter from Lloyd that mentioned Frank and Frank's girlfriend at the time (now his wife, Virginia), and the framed print.

I inscribed the back of the frame with this note. As we unwrapped the photo, onlookers started gathering and then "oohhed and aahhed" about it to Frank. He started pointing out his plane and the town below that he recognized. He'd never had that print and was very appreciative.

Virginia wasn't able to join Frank at the meeting, as she's not doing that well apparently. He said she sleeps about half the day.

PS- Dad, at the meeting, Frank handed me a letter he received in 1997 from the Hungarian Historic Aviation Society. They were wanting information regarding the mission over Budapest when shot down. Frank thinks they may have since collected info that would be helpful to us regarding Lloyd. How's your Hungarian?

Wow. I'm speechless. What a moving, thoughtful gesture!

P.S. Uncle Lloyd isn't my only hero...Levi Frank Caldwell and Russell Eric Dan Fowler and Thomas Bennett Fowler are, too.

Thanks, Kris. I'm not in the same category as the other two names, but it was nice to be at the right place at the right time to meet Frank and reconnect him with some memories.

What a great day this must have been, to see the veteran Airman looking at his sweet old plane, again. The more I learn about the Air Corps sacrifices, the more I admire them. I hope that Frank Caldwell feels admired, because he richly deserves it...and all this would make Uncle Lloyd very, very happy.

Way to go, Russ, and Amanda Faye.

Dad

I am SO proud of you two for giving "honor to whom honor is due." I am concerned for Virginia. I hope it's just a sunlight deficiency and will soon pass with the coming of spring.

The picture of Amanda Faye is beautiful, too! It looks so good to see the promise of another baby in the family!

Bless you--every one of you!
Love,
Mom/Grandma
